NOTE: Our book club has been taking a temporary break, but we hope to restart again in the future. If you are interested in the book club, contact us.
Past picks have included:
March 2011: "Our Stolen Future" by Theo Colborn, Dianne Dumanoski and John Peterson Myers. This
book asks whether we are threatening our fertility, intelligence, and
survival with toxins present in our soil, air and water.
January 2011: "Disconnect" by Devra Davis. With a focus on cell phones and wireless communication that dominate our culture these days, this book explores the health risks of the technology and how you can safely use it to protect yourself.
November 2010: "Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life" by David Servan-Schreiber. Written by a 15 year survivor of brain cancer, this book chronicles both conventional and alternative ways to slow and prevent cancer.
September 2010: "Living Downstream" by Sandra Steingraber. This book looks at the growing body of evidence linking cancer to environmental contamination, thorugh the eyes of a woman who is both a scientist (biologist) and a survivor of cancer.
May 2010: "Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis" by Alanna Mitchell. This is the first book to examine the current state of the world’s oceans, and the great unexamined ecological crisis of the planet: the fact that we are altering everything about the oceans, from their temperature, salinity, and acidity, to the life within them.
April 2010: "Pink Ribbons, Inc. - Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy" by Samantha King. This book explores the truth behind cause-related marketing. Do we know where the money goes when we buy 'pink' products or should we think before we pink?
March 2010: "Not Just A Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry" by Stacy Malkan. This groundbreaking expose’ about toxic chemicals in personal care products also looks to hopeful solutions for a healthier future.
February 2010: "Slow Death by Rubber Duck - How the Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects our Health." by Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie. Two brave, crazy guys who exposed themselves to several toxic substances in an effort to gauge the effect this would have on their health. Reads like a detective 'who-done-it?' novel!

WHEN's Inaugural Book Club Meeting a Success!
After sharing our thoughts on the terrible tradegy in Haiti, on January 20, 2010 WHEN convened the first meeting of the Health & the Environment Book Club.
This one-of-a-kind book club is dedicated to reading and discussing an exciting roster of selected books. The first pick “Slow Death by Rubber Duck” proved popular because it deals with contemporary information that the average consumer can take action on in their lives. As we got to know each other’s personal story, the need for a family of like minds became more and more apparent, as was expressed the day after by some of the members.
