The Women’s Healthy Environments Network (WHEN) educates the general public, media and policy makers that environmental health is a key determinant of public health. We are a unique organization, working in the space where women’s lives, environmental issues and human health intersect. 

WHEN is seeking an energetic and strategic leader as a part-time Executive Director on issues related to health and the environment. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this role is a part-time, 12-month contract with possibility of becoming full-time and renewing beyond 12-months.

The successful candidate will oversee finance, administration, volunteer management, human resources, program planning, fundraising, advocacy project design and implementation. This is a non-voting position with the responsibility to enable the effective implementation of the Board’s decisions. 

This position is a unique opportunity to build WHEN’s evidence-based education and advocacy work. WHEN encourages applicants from racialized and Indigenous individuals with lived experience of environmental exposures.  

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the organization, including finances, communications, social media, and e-newsletters, and acting as a signing authority at the organization’s banking institution

  • Represent the organization at relevant consultations, committee hearings, meetings and collaboratives 

  • Acting as the primary liaison with WHEN’s volunteers, managing and mentoring volunteers throughout their various projects

  • Developing work plans based on the Board’s strategic priorities and supporting the implementation of the Board’s commitments, and provide reports to the  monthly Board meetings (currently virtual, otherwise one evening per month at the Centre for Social Innovation, downtown Toronto)

  • Design and implementing fundraising strategies, conduct grant and funder scans,  writing proposals, monitoring deliverables and completing final reports, and maintain good working relationships with funders and donors

  • Produce evidence-based research, public education resources, consultation submissions and reports in collaboration with environmental health colleagues

This is a time-limited, funding-dependent contract position with opportunity for extension. 

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Knowledge of environmental health issues and policy, and commitment to WHEN’s mission and values

  • Experience managing projects, teams and volunteers, ideally in a non-profit setting

  • Experience with individual donor, major donor, and foundation fundraising

  • Understanding of charity finances, obligations, and budgeting

  • Skills in communication and media

  • Proficiency in English, bilingualism with French an asset

  • Independent and self-motivated work skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Collaboration and facilitation skills

  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills

  • Experience with strategic thinking and long-term planning
